Our Strategy

We don’t just teach maths — we teach confidence, clarity, and exam technique. By combining strong foundations with tailored strategies for each student, we help them reach their target grade and beyond.

Lesson Focus by Target Grade

Strengthening Problem-Solving

Here the focus shifts towards multi-step problems, worded questions, and exam-style practice. We encourage students to think through their reasoning, make connections across topics, and spot common patterns. By analysing errors and slowing down their working, we help them tackle careless mistakes and strengthen accuracy.

At this stage, we concentrate on the core skills that underpin GCSE maths — from number fluency and algebra basics to fractions and percentages. Lessons are broken down into clear, step-by-step explanations with plenty of worked examples, helping students gain confidence and reduce fear of mistakes while celebrating small wins along the way.

At the higher grades, we build mastery through advanced problem-solving, challenging algebra and geometry, and non-routine exam questions. Students practise under timed conditions, explore multiple solution methods, and develop strategies for breaking down complex questions. This training equips them to manage time effectively, stay accurate under pressure, and perform at their best.

Building Strong Foundations

Mastering Exam Technique

Tackling Common Problems

Many students feel they “just can’t do maths,” which holds them back more than the subject itself. We build confidence by breaking topics into simple steps, celebrating progress, and showing students that mistakes are part of learning. As they see their skills improve, their self-belief grows alongside their results.

Low Confidence

Running Out of Time

Even strong students can underperform if they can’t finish the paper. We train students to pace themselves, identify which questions to prioritise, and apply time-saving methods without losing accuracy. By practising under exam conditions, they learn how to stay calm, focused, and efficient.

Careless Mistakes

It’s frustrating to know the method but still lose marks through small errors. We tackle this by teaching students how to slow down, check their work systematically, and spot the patterns in the mistakes they make. Over time, they develop habits that reduce these slip-ups and help them pick up every mark they deserve.

Not Knowing Where to Start

One of the hardest challenges in maths is opening a problem and not knowing how to begin. We give students a “toolkit” of strategies for breaking down questions, spotting key information, and choosing the right method. This way, they feel equipped to tackle any question with confidence.

Wordy Questions

Many marks are lost on word problems where students know the maths but struggle to translate the wording. We help by breaking down the language, teaching students to highlight key details, and showing them how to reframe the question into clear maths steps. This makes complex problems feel much more approachable.

Knowledge Gaps

Gaps in understanding can appear for many reasons — changing teachers, moving between sets, switching schools, or simply missing a key lesson. Left unaddressed, these gaps make later topics much harder. We identify weak areas early through careful questioning and diagnostic practice, then fill them with clear explanations and targeted exercises. By rebuilding these missing links, students regain confidence and are able to progress smoothly.

Further Considerations

Learning Styles

We know that every student learns differently, so our lessons are designed to adapt to their needs. Some understand best when concepts are explained visually, others when ideas are broken down step by step, and many benefit from seeing how topics connect to the bigger picture. We keep lessons engaging and interactive to support students who may have shorter attention spans, and we motivate those who struggle with confidence or focus by setting clear goals and celebrating progress. By tailoring our approach to each individual, we make maths more accessible, enjoyable, and effective for every student.

Exam Boards

Each exam board has its own style, structure, and emphasis — and we make sure students are fully prepared for the one they’re sitting. Whether it’s AQA, Edexcel, OCR, or another board, we use board-specific past papers, question styles, and mark schemes so students become familiar with exactly what to expect. We highlight the small differences that can make a big impact on marks, from the way questions are worded to how methods should be shown.

Our Progress Tracker

We monitor how students are doing by regularly assessing their knowledge in various topics to give a more wholistic view of progress. Please get in touch to find out more!

Google Classroom Integration

Each student and their parents have access to their own Google Classroom page to which the tutor uploads lesson materials, homework and progress reports. It is a place where students can share their own questions and parents are kept updated. Please get in touch to find out more!
